The CMMBased Appraisal for Internal Process Improvement (CBA-IPI) method is
highly effective and well respected worldwide.
It uses the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and a highly collaborative
approach to assess the maturity of the software development process of an
organization, showing the strengths and weaknesses of its process according to
the CMM. Findings from the assessment are used to prioritize business-driven
software process improvement action.
However, the standard SEI
method is typically very expensive and some lead assessors may emphasize CMM
compliance at the expense of business relevance.
This light weight assessment
method is designed to foster lasting CMM based software process improvement that
makes business sense.

Who should attend?
This 2 day course is designed
for practitioners who want to understand the method so that they can use it
internally to accurately baseline the maturity of the software development
process of their organization and later track progress in its improvement.
Detailed knowledge of the CMM
is a prerequisite. The STPP class “Introduction to the CMM” is designed to
integrate seamlessly with this course within a 5 days week. The major topics
covered in the course include:
 |
CBA-IPI method overview |
 |
Team building (using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) |
 |
Understanding and administering the Maturity
Questionnaire |
 |
Gathering objective evidence (how software is really
developed in the organization) |
 |
Consolidating data into relevant and accurate
information |
 |
Generating and presenting findings to management |
 |
Setting up a process improvement effort |
For each module, students are given the opportunity to
realistically practice their new skills on real data from their organization.
Typically the course is immediately followed by an
assessment (document reviews, independent corroboration, process inspections,
interviews, open discussion with the technical staff, sponsor feedback, and
prioritized actions list). On request, STPP can conduct post assessment follow
up (identification of best practices, causal analysis, formal findings report,
support for tactical planning and
support for formal presentation to management by the local team).
