eXtreme Software Process, the real XP

Many organizations have recognized the fact that only high quality processes can yield high quality products delivered on schedule, at the planned cost and in reduced cycle time. SEI process ideas (CMM, PSP, TSP) have produced impressive results in industry. However, some companies find SEI’s approach difficult to fully and immediately implement. Some programmers may also be turned off by the strict discipline of PSP and CMM and never experience the joy of true software engineering excellence.

This mentoring package is intended as an intensive introduction to the key concepts of process improvement on the job, right there and now. It borrows from the concepts of learning organization, experience factory, CMM, PSP and TSP. However it is not a CMM class, and  it is NOT a PSP class either. Engineers interested in CMM or in the official PSP training are encouraged to contact STPP, an SEI transition partner for PSP/TSP.

Benefit

This highly practical and intensive approach:

Integrates process improvement  in daily activities from day 1

Builds first aid procedures and tool support on the job (all assignments yield true company process assets)

Bridges the gap between CMM and individual practice

Emphasizes team work as well as personal best

Fosters alignment of all SPI actions with business goals by involving management

Turbo charges the organization SPI effort

Who should attend?

This one week mentoring package consists in 50% consulting on the job. It is designed for practitioners involved with the specification, the development or the maintenance of software products and their artifacts.  This includes SEPG members and even non programmers. The goal is to demonstrate process improvement, one on one, applying the process on the job, right there and now. Major principles of organizational and cognitive psychology are also brought to bear to equally emphasize teamwork and personal excellence. Engineers learn by doing and from each other.

Each attendee will receive a binder with all speaker foils and a copy of the following books:

“A Discipline for Software Engineering” by Watts S. Humphrey

“Software Inspection” by Tom Gilb and Dorothy Graham

 “UML Distilled” by Martin Fowler

“Type talk at work” by Otto Kroeger and Janet Thuesen

Mentoring topics

This is a resolutely practical workshop involving morning lectures followed by intensive practice on the job in the afternoon. The topics covered include the following:

Process origins and organization level SPI (TQM, CMM, experience factory)

PSP and the Capability Maturity Model (CMM)

Personal measurement framework including software size measures

Gathering and analyzing existing organization data

Planning based on documented procedures and personal historical data

Assembling a “first aid” support toolset

Elements of requirements engineering and architectural design

Introduction to design methods and design notation (UML, Booch)

Personal reviews, cross reviews and formal inspections (taught by practicing on real company documents)

Process definition, measurement and analysis (GQM and QFD)

Setting personal and team improvement goals aligned with those of the organization

Working in teams: introduction to the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
